Corinne Duyvis is the first of the RPP short fiction authors this quarter. Her story, “The John”, is a piece of pulp fiction our imaginary Magdala would call “shocking, titillating, and really quite magnificent”, I think. I thought I’d get Corinne’s point of view on things, just to give some background. So for your reading pleasure, here’s a little mini-interview with the author herself:
1. Describe “The John” for us in one sentence.
Hookervamp.
Oh, that’s one word. But I guess it works, right? (The story spent several months as ‘hookervamp.doc’ before I started submitting it in seriousness. I’m still somewhat attached to the name…)
2. Pulp fiction: usually your thing, or just a momentary diversion for you?
Momentary diversion – like most of my short fiction, actually! My novels are usually firmly on the urban/contemporary fantasy side of things, but I love short stories because they give me a place to experiment with different subject matters and writing styles.
As for “The John”, I wanted something with a pulp plot and style while subverting some of the more problematic elements. Whether I succeeded, I don’t know – but the intention is there, and it was a heck of a lot of fun to write.
3. What are you working on now?
I’m brainstorming a YA sci-fi involving interdimensional refugees, writing a YA urban fantasy involving demons, editing a dark fantasy novel involving a different breed of demons, and querying a humorous urban fantasy novel involving flying doormats.
Add that to a few short story ideas fluttering around the brain and a graphic novel project I’m working on with a certain someone*, I’m keeping plenty busy!
Thanks for that, Corinne! If you all haven’t checked out “The John” yet, now’s a great time!
Look out for more miniviews with RPP authors upcoming.
*[Editor's Note: It's not an in-joke--she's just talking about me.]

Okay, now I feel lazy. Good interview, guys.
